Has this ever happened to you in a game: you did something that wasn’t quite fair, or wasn’t quite within the rules, and the referee didn’t see it?

Maybe you held a little. Maybe you were out of bounds but nobody called it. Maybe you had a little extra push that wasn’t technically legal.

Here’s the question I want to ask about that: does it matter if nobody saw it?

Read this passage slowly.

The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.

Proverbs 11:1 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

In Bible times, people used scales to weigh things when they were buying and selling. Some people would cheat by using dishonest scales that gave wrong measurements. God says he detests that — he really doesn’t like it. Not because someone caught them. Because it’s wrong.

Playing fair works the same way. The ref not seeing it doesn’t make it okay. You saw it. God saw it. And your teammates saw it, even if they didn’t say anything.

The players who play fair even when nobody is watching are the players everyone trusts. Their teammates trust them. Their coaches trust them. And when the game is on the line and someone needs to come through, those are the players everyone wants the ball to go to.

Playing fair isn’t just following rules. It’s about the kind of person you’re becoming. And every choice you make in a game — even the ones nobody sees — is practice for who you’re going to be.

Every choice you make when nobody is watching is practice for who you’re going to be.

One Question

Why do you think playing fair matters even when the ref doesn’t catch you?

Let kids wrestle with this. The “it matters because you know” answer is the one worth getting to.

Carry This Out

Play fair. Every time. Whether anyone sees or not.

This devotional works especially well with 10–12 year olds who are starting to think more independently about right and wrong. For younger groups, simplify the question to “is it okay to break a rule if nobody catches you?”
