What a Road Win Builds

Timing 15–20 min
Setting After a road win

Tone Affirming and building. Names what the road win produced beyond the two points.

You won. Away from home, in their building, with their crowd, in an environment designed to make it harder for you.

I want to name what that actually produced. Because the two points in the standings is the smallest part of it.

Read this passage slowly.

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Romans 5:3–4 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Suffering produces perseverance. The chain starts in the hard thing. And a road win in a hostile environment is a hard thing — the kind of hard thing that the chain in Romans runs through to produce something that a comfortable win doesn’t.

What does a road win build that a home win doesn’t? Confidence of a specific kind. Not the confidence that comes from performing in favorable conditions — the confidence that comes from performing when the conditions were working against you. That confidence is more durable because it’s been tested.

It builds the knowledge, as a team, that you can compete in an environment that doesn’t support you. That the crowd doesn’t determine the result. That your game travels. And that knowledge is available in every future road game because you have the evidence now.

It also builds character — the specific kind that forms when you hold your competitive standard against genuine resistance. You didn’t need the crowd to be on your side. You competed anyway. And the competition was better for it.

Take that with you. The two points matter. This matters more.

The confidence built by performing when the conditions work against you is more durable than the confidence built in favorable conditions. You have the evidence now.

One Question

What specifically did today build in this team that a home win couldn’t have built? Name it — not in general, in this game.

Specific to today’s game. The general road win value is less useful than the specific thing built in this particular competition.

Carry This Out

Two points in the standings. Much more than that in what was built. Take it with you.
