Milestones & Moments
Something happened. And now the program is carrying something it didn’t carry last week.
A suspension. A forfeit. A controversy that is bigger than the team wanted to be dealing with at this point in the season. Whatever the specific form — the effect is that there’s something in this room right now that wasn’t there before, and it’s making everything harder.
How this team responds to it is going to say something important about who we are.
Read this passage slowly.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
Do not be overcome. The cloud that is over this program right now has the potential to be overcome by or to overcome with good. Both of those are available. The choice — made by this group, in this room, in how they respond to the situation — determines which one happens.
Being overcome by the cloud looks like: the situation becomes the story of the season. The team fractures around it. The controversy defines the culture rather than the values. The people involved are either abandoned by the team or defended past the point of honesty. The focus leaves the game entirely and settles on the situation.
Overcoming it with good looks like: honest acknowledgment of what happened. Appropriate accountability without mob justice. The team rallying around both the standards that were compromised and the person who compromised them. The focus returning to the work as soon as honestly possible. The situation becoming an opportunity to demonstrate what this program actually stands for rather than just what it claims to.
You will be watched in how you handle this. That’s not the primary reason to handle it well. But it’s true. And the program that handles a difficult situation with integrity earns a reputation that controversy alone can’t produce.
The controversy becomes the story of the season or it becomes the moment the team demonstrated what it actually stands for. This team gets to decide which.
What does handling this situation with integrity look like specifically — for this team, in this context, in the next two weeks?
Practical and specific. The integrity response needs to be named concretely, not just aspired to.
Do not be overcome by it. Overcome it with good. That’s the choice in front of this team.
This devotional requires sensitivity to the specific situation. Adapt the language to fit the actual circumstances without inflaming an already difficult situation.
