Goals & Process
This is the last one.
Whatever happens today, this group of people will never play together in quite this configuration again. Some of you are done after today. Some will be back but with a different team. The season that started months ago ends today.
I want to make sure you’re in that fully. Not past it, not through it — in it. Present for the whole thing.
Read this passage slowly.
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
1 Corinthians 9:24 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
Run in such a way as to get the prize. Give it the full effort the prize deserves. Not a partial effort hedged by the fear of falling short. The complete commitment of a competitor who has decided that this race is worth running as hard as possible.
The last game of a season has a specific quality that most don’t. You know it’s the last one. Which means you know how rare it is. Most of the time when you competed, there was another game coming. Today there may not be. And that knowledge, if you let it in, changes how you carry yourself into the competition.
Leave nothing in the room. Not because the season depends on it — because this is the last time this team gets to do this together. And the person who saves something for next time when there is no next time has made a trade they didn’t mean to make.
Run your race today. Fully. In such a way as to get the prize. Whatever the outcome — compete in a way that when the final whistle blows, you have nothing left to wonder about.
The person who saves something for next time when there is no next time has made a trade they didn’t mean to make. Leave nothing.
One word. What do you want to be true about how you compete today? Just one word.
Quick round. One word each. Sends them out with collective intention.
Run in such a way as to get the prize. Leave nothing. Go.
This is specifically for the day of the last game of the season. 8–10 minutes maximum. Land it and release them to compete.
