Before the Banquet

Before the awards and the food and the photos, I want to take five minutes.

Because what is ending tonight deserves more than a ceremony. This season was a real thing. It cost real things. It produced real things. And the people in this room went through it together. That’s worth pausing to acknowledge before we celebrate it.

Read this passage slowly.

Let that sit for a second before you move.

A season for every activity. The season you are in right now is the season of ending this one. And endings deserve their own kind of attention — not rushed, not skipped past on the way to what’s next. The thing that is ending was real. It deserves to be named as real before it becomes a memory.

What was this season? For some of you, it was the best one you’ve had. For some, the hardest. For most, somewhere in between — a mixture of what you hoped for and what you didn’t, of things that went right and things that didn’t, of moments you’ll carry and moments you’d rather leave behind.

All of it was real. The wins and the losses. The relationships built and the ones strained. The growth that happened and the work still undone. The season doesn’t deserve to be remembered only by the highlights. It deserves to be received as a whole thing — complicated, costly, real.

Tonight marks it. The banquet is the acknowledgment that this season happened and that the people who went through it together are worth honoring. Let the acknowledgment be full. Let the gratitude be specific. Let the celebration be earned.
