Milestones & Moments
The record is what it is. That’s not what I want to talk about.
I want to talk about what this season actually was. Not the result — the experience. What it cost. What it built. What you know now that you didn’t know in August. What this group of people became through seven months of doing something hard together.
Read this passage slowly.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:2–4 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
Mature and complete. Not perfect. Not undefeated. Not what the preseason goal sheet said. Mature and complete — the specific development that comes from going through something real all the way to the end.
The season produced several things that the record doesn’t capture. It produced the trust between people who went through hard things together and found out whether each other would hold. It produced the knowledge of what this team is capable of in the specific conditions that this season created. It produced the individual development — the athlete who is different in some specific way from the one who showed up in August.
And it produced the experience of finishing something. Of seeing a thing through from beginning to end, through the middle where it got hard, to tonight. That experience is not nothing. The athlete who has finished a season — especially a hard one — knows something about themselves that the one who only showed up for the good parts doesn’t.
What did this season produce in you? Not in the program — in you. The specific person who went through it. That’s what tonight is worth marking.
The season produced something the record doesn’t capture. The trust, the development, the experience of finishing something through the middle where it got hard.
What did this season produce in you specifically — not in the team, in you? Who are you different from the person who showed up in August?
Personal reflection on individual development. The most significant answers name specific changes rather than general growth.
Name what was produced. Not just the record. The real thing the season built in you.
This devotional works best in a team-only gathering rather than the full banquet with families. The honest retrospective is easier without an external audience.
