Milestones & Moments
They’re back.
The suspension is served. The consequence is done. And now comes the question of what the return looks like — for them, for the team, and for the culture of this program going forward.
Read this passage slowly.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
No condemnation. The consequence was the consequence. It has been served. And what follows the consequence — in a program that functions well — is restoration, not permanent marking. No condemnation means the person returns to full standing. Not to pretend the situation didn’t happen. But to not let it become a permanent identifier.
For the returning athlete: the suspension was the consequence. It is done. What comes now is the opportunity to demonstrate, in practice and in competition, that what happened before the suspension is not who you are. The team is watching — not waiting for you to fail again, but watching to see who you are going to be from here. Give them the clearest possible answer.
For the team: they’re back. They served the consequence. The culture of this program requires that the return is genuine — not provisional, not resentful, not a performance of welcome while the real feeling is something else. The person who comes back from a disciplinary absence and feels the genuine welcome of the team they hurt is experiencing something that has the potential to change them. Don’t underestimate the power of what this room does in the next week.
The suspension is done. The return is today. Let it be a real one.
The consequence is done. What follows is restoration — not pretending the situation didn’t happen, but not letting it become a permanent identifier either.
For the returning athlete: what do you want the team to know about who you are going to be from here? For the team: what does genuine welcome look like in the next week?
Address both parties directly. Both have a role in making the return genuine.
The suspension is done. The return is today. Make it real.
This devotional is for the day of or the day before the athlete’s return. It sets the frame for the reintegration.
