Adversity & Setbacks
Some of the people watching this team this season have already decided what you are.
The recruiting rankings. The preseason predictions. The way the opponent’s staff talks about your program in their film sessions. They have a narrative about what kind of team this is, and it is not favorable, and they are about to find out whether they were right.
Read this passage slowly.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
Overcome evil with good. The principle is about the mechanism of change: you do not defeat a negative narrative by fighting it directly. You defeat it by producing something that makes it false. The team that spends its energy arguing against the external assessment is a team that has let the external assessment set the agenda. The team that spends its energy building something worth seeing produces a different result.
The external narrative about this program is changed one performance at a time. Not one big statement performance that everyone credits to luck or an anomaly. The accumulation of consistent, quality performances that become harder to dismiss as exceptions until they become the new expectation. That process takes longer than a single game and shorter than a career.
Here is the specific competitive advantage available to a team playing against low expectations: when you outperform what was predicted, the psychological impact on the opponent is real. They came in assuming a certain level of competition. They are getting something different. That dissonance is a competitive resource. Use it.
Compete excellently. Consistently. Let the performances answer the narrative. That is the only response that actually works.

What specific performance this season would most directly contradict the narrative people have about this program? What would it require from you to produce it?
The specific performance named becomes the competitive target. Make it concrete.
Overcome the narrative with excellence. Consistently. The performances answer.
Most effective when the external narrative is genuinely present and the team is aware of it. Do not introduce a negative narrative that the team wasn’t already carrying.
