I’m going to tell you something that coaches always say but don’t always explain.

“Try your best.”

You’ve heard that your whole life. But what does it actually mean? Because trying your best when the game is exciting and you feel great is easy. Trying your best when you’re tired, or when the team is losing, or when you just made a mistake — that’s the harder one. That’s the one worth talking about.

Read this passage slowly.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

Colossians 3:23 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Paul says work at it with all your heart. Not just when you feel like it. Not just when you’re winning. All your heart, all the time.

Here’s what that looks like in a real game: it means you keep running even when you’re tired. It means you pay attention at practice even when you’d rather be somewhere else. It means when you mess up, you don’t give up — you get back up and try again.

Trying your best doesn’t mean you’ll always play perfectly. Nobody does. It means you never gave up, never stopped caring, never went through the motions. That’s something you can control every single game, no matter what the score says.

And here’s the secret: the players who try their hardest even when it’s hard are the ones who get better the fastest. Not because they’re the most talented — because they don’t quit.

Trying your best when it’s easy is easy. Trying your best when it’s hard is the real thing.

One Question

When is the hardest time for you to keep trying? What makes you want to give up?

Honest answers here matter. Some kids will name specific situations — losing by a lot, making the same mistake twice. Validate those rather than rushing past them.

Carry This Out

Work at it with all your heart. Every time. That’s what this team does.
