To the next level — whatever form that takes for you. The professional tryout, the graduate transfer, the decision to keep playing past when most people would have stopped. You’ve decided to pursue it.

Estimate the cost. The yes to the next level is an excellent decision only if it’s an honest yes — one that has accounted for what the pursuit actually requires. What does the yes actually cost? The time — the years that will go into the pursuit that could go into other things. The financial reality of pursuing sport at a level that may not pay well for a long time, or at all. The relationships that will be organized around the pursuit. The alternative paths that will not be taken because this one is being taken.

None of those costs are reasons not to pursue it. They’re the honest accounting that makes the yes a real yes rather than a wishful one.

The athlete who pursues the next level with a clear-eyed understanding of what it costs and a genuine conviction that the pursuit is worth the cost is the athlete who can sustain the pursuit when it gets hard — which it will, at a level that surpasses what you’ve experienced so far.

You said yes. Now mean it. Fully, honestly, with full knowledge of what you signed up for. That’s the yes that builds the tower.
