Character & Integrity
There’s a version of this team that is content with adequate.
The practice that was fine but not sharp. The effort level that was sufficient to get through it. The standard that was good enough to avoid criticism but not high enough to produce something exceptional.
And adequate, accumulated over time, produces a team that is exactly what adequate produces: ordinary.
Read this passage slowly.
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
Hebrews 12:11 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
A harvest of righteousness and peace. Not immediate. Not comfortable. Later — for those who have been trained by it. The discipline is the mechanism. The standard is what the discipline is calibrated to. And the harvest is available only to the athletes who held the standard through the painful part.
The difference between good enough and excellent is not always large in any individual moment. It’s a degree of focus, a degree of effort, a degree of attention to the quality of what’s being produced. The rep that was fine versus the rep that was sharp. The preparation that covered the basics versus the preparation that went beyond them.
That difference, compounded over a season, is enormous. The team that consistently goes beyond good enough in their daily work builds a level of preparation and precision that adequate teams cannot replicate. Not because they work dramatically more. Because they work marginally better, every day, until the margin is a chasm.
Adequate is comfortable. Excellence is uncomfortable. That’s not an argument against it. That’s what makes the harvest worth having. The discipline is painful. The harvest it produces is not available by any other route.
The team that consistently goes beyond good enough builds a preparation level that adequate teams cannot replicate, because they work marginally better every single day.
Where has this team been settling for adequate when it’s capable of excellent? Name the specific area and what excellent would look like there.
Specific and honest. The general “we could always do better” doesn’t do the work. The named specific area does.
Adequate is comfortable. Excellent is uncomfortable. Choose the discomfort that produces the harvest.
Use when the team’s standard has drifted toward adequate. This is a challenge devotional, not a comfort one.
