What You’re Signing Up For

I want to talk to you about what you’re walking into.

Not to discourage you. You’ve earned this. The opportunity is real and it’s worth taking. But the version of the next level that lives in your imagination right now is probably missing some information that would be useful to have before you arrive.

Read this passage slowly.

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Estimate the cost. Jesus is describing the wisdom of entering a commitment with a realistic picture of what it will require. Not to talk yourself out of it — to prepare for it. The builder who doesn’t count the cost doesn’t get the tower. They get a half-built foundation and a lesson in the importance of honest preparation.

What does the next level actually cost? More than the recruiting process led you to believe. The competition will be better than what you’ve faced. The demands will be higher. The gap between where you are now and where you need to be to contribute will require more work than what got you recruited. That’s not an insult to your ability — it’s a description of how development at the highest levels works.

The athletes who arrive at the next level already knowing this are the ones who are least shocked by it. They came with realistic expectations, a willingness to do the work required, and the patience to trust the development process even when the gap between their current level and the required level feels large.

Count the cost. Know what you’re entering. And then sign — with full knowledge that it’s worth what it costs.
