Life Beyond the Sport
You have something right now that most people never have: attention.
The platform. The audience. The ability to say something to a significant number of people and have them hear it. That window is open right now because of what you do athletically. It will not always be open at this size, because the athletic performance that opened it will eventually end. The question is what you do with the window while it is open.
Read this passage slowly.
Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15–16 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
Making the most of every opportunity. The instruction is not to be relentlessly strategic about every moment. It is to be awake to what is available — to not let the window close without having used it for something worth using it for.
The athlete’s platform is a time-bounded resource. The follower count that seems permanent is connected to a career that will end. The voice that people are willing to hear right now, because of what you do on the field, is a different voice than the one you will have when you are a retired athlete. Not better or worse necessarily — different, and currently available in a way that it will not always be.
What is worth using it for? That is the question only you can answer, and it requires knowing what you actually believe and care about beyond the sport. The athlete who uses the platform to amplify things they genuinely care about — whose public voice is an extension of actual convictions rather than brand management — is using a real thing for a real purpose. The one who is performing for the audience without a genuine message behind the performance is using the window to look out, rather than to say something worth hearing.
The window is open. What do you want to say while it is?
The follower count is connected to a career that will end. The voice people will hear right now, because of what you do athletically, is different from the voice you will have later. Use the window.
If you could use your platform right now for one thing that actually matters to you — not what manages your brand, what you actually care about — what would it be?
The honest answer to this question often surprises athletes. The thing they actually care about is frequently different from what their platform currently reflects.
The window is open. Use it for something worth the opening.
Most relevant for athletes with meaningful public presence. The urgency of the window question is proportional to the size of the platform.
