The Season Arc

The Reset

Timing 15–20 min
Setting Mid-bye-week team gathering for honest mid-season assessment
Audience Athletes and coaches
Tone Diagnostic and honest. The pause as an opportunity to see clearly.

When the competition stops for a week, something becomes visible that was hidden by the movement.

You have been so inside the season — so absorbed in the week-to-week execution — that you haven’t had the distance to see what is actually happening with this team. The bye week creates that distance. It is worth using it to look honestly at what you see.

Read this passage slowly.

Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.

Lamentations 3:40 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Let us examine our ways and test them. The instruction from Lamentations is for a community in crisis, but the practice it describes belongs in every season — the deliberate pause to look at how things are actually going, not just how they feel in the moment of competition.

The mid-season reset is a diagnostic exercise. The team that uses the bye week to ask honest questions about where it is has information that the team absorbed in the weekly grind does not have. What is working that we should do more of? What is not working that we have been tolerating because the season keeps moving? Where is the gap between the team we said we wanted to be in camp and the team we actually are right now?

The answers to those questions, received honestly, are the most useful coaching information available. Not the film from last week’s game. Not the statistical analysis. The honest human assessment from the people who are living inside the season: where are we, really?

The reset does not require fixing everything this week. It requires seeing clearly. From clear seeing, the right adjustments become obvious. From the blur of the ongoing competition, they stay hidden.

The team that uses the bye week to ask honest questions about where it is has information the team absorbed in the weekly grind does not have. The pause produces visibility. Use it.

One Question

What is one thing about this team — positive or negative — that has become visible to you now that the competition paused? What do you want to do with that information?

Open-ended observation question. The answers often surface things the coaching staff has been sensing but hasn’t heard named from the team.

Carry This Out

Examine your ways. Test them. See clearly. Then return to the work.

This devotional works best in a setting where psychological safety is high enough for honest answers. Create that safety explicitly before asking the discussion question.
