Sport-Specific Contexts
For most of you, this is the last season.
Not the last season you’ll care about sport. Not the last season you’ll work out or watch games or argue about who should have been in the starting lineup. But the last season you’ll put on this uniform, play for this program, compete with these specific people beside you.
Most athletes don’t know their last game is their last game until after it’s over. You have the rare opportunity to know.
Read this passage slowly.
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

Do it with all your might. Ecclesiastes is the most honest book in the Bible about the finite nature of time and the foolishness of treating it as inexhaustible. The Preacher’s point throughout is not despair — it is urgency. Because the window closes. The opportunity ends. The season in which this specific thing was possible becomes history, and you cannot retrieve it.
The athlete who sleepwalks through a season thinking there’s always next year doesn’t have that option. This is next year. This is the season that will be on the other side of the last game you ever play for this program. How you compete in it — the investment you bring, the relationships you build, the standard you hold — will be what you carry out the door when the season ends.
The awareness of finality is not meant to produce anxiety. It is meant to produce presence. The athlete who competes with full awareness that this moment is finite is more fully in the moment than the one who assumes there is more time. The presence that finality produces is one of the most powerful competitive states available.
Compete with full awareness of what this season is. It is the last one. Make it the best one.

If this season ends exactly the way you hope it ends, what do you want to be able to say about how you competed in it? What has to be true about your effort for you to be able to say that?
Goal-setting question framed through the lens of integrity rather than outcomes. The answers are often more about character than wins.
This is the last season. Make it the best one. Compete with full awareness of what you have right now.
