The Reputation You Build One Play at a Time

Nobody builds a reputation in one game.

The reputation — the thing other teams know about you, the thing the officials expect from you, the thing your teammates trust about you — is built in the accumulation of small decisions over time. Plays that felt too small to matter. Moments where nobody was watching. Choices that seemed inconsequential in the moment.

All of it adds up to something. And that something follows you.

Read this passage slowly.

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Trusted with very little. Dishonest with very little. Jesus is describing the principle of small-scale integrity as the predictor of large-scale character. The person who holds the standard in the moments that seem too small to matter is the person who holds it when the stakes are enormous. The person who lets it slide in the small moments is the person who can’t be trusted in the large ones.

In competition, this shows up in specific ways. How you respond to a call that goes against you when nobody is watching your reaction. Whether you hold your effort level on the play that isn’t coming to you. How you talk about opponents in the locker room. Whether you take the shortcut in the drill that the coach isn’t monitoring closely.

Each of those small decisions is a deposit or a withdrawal from the account that is your character. Individually, no single decision is decisive. Cumulatively, they determine who you are in the moments that actually count.

The athlete who holds the standard in the small things doesn’t have to think about it in the big things. The character is already built. The reputation is already established. The big moment just reveals what was already there.

Build it one play at a time. The small decisions are where it actually happens.
