Tone Diagnostic. Understanding pressure as a mechanism before addressing it.

Every athlete experiences pressure. Most athletes never fully understand what it actually is.

Not the feeling of it — that’s familiar. The mechanism. What is actually happening when pressure takes something away from a performance? Where does it come from and how does it work?

This week, we’re naming it. The next two weeks, we’re addressing it.

Read this passage slowly.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Cast all your anxiety. Not some of it. Cast it — throw it somewhere outside yourself. On him. The instruction is both theological and neurological: the external placement of the anxiety is what reduces its capacity to affect performance.

Pressure, in its athletic form, is the experience of your identity being at stake in the outcome of the performance. When the result matters so much that a bad outcome would damage who you believe yourself to be — that’s pressure. And it takes something away from the performance because cognitive resources that should be available for executing the skill are redirected to managing the implications of failure.

Where does it come from? Almost always from identity. The athlete whose worth is entirely in their performance experiences the most pressure, because every competition is a referendum on who they are. The athlete whose identity is secured somewhere other than the performance experiences pressure differently — the stakes of the game are high but the stakes for their personhood are not.

That’s the diagnosis. Next week we look at how to build the foundation that changes the pressure response. This week: understand what you’re actually dealing with.

Pressure is your identity being at stake in the outcome. It takes cognitive resources from execution and redirects them to managing the implications of failure.

One Question

When do you feel pressure most acutely? What specifically is at stake when you feel it — not the game, but the personal thing?

The personal thing at stake is the diagnostic. The answers reveal the identity source of the pressure.

Carry This Out

Understand the mechanism. The pressure comes from identity. Come back next week.
