The Season Arc
Nobody expects you to win tonight.
The bracket says you shouldn’t be here. The rankings say the other team is better. The narrative going into this game doesn’t have you in the final chapter. You are the underdog, or you are eliminated and playing out the string, or you are in a position where the conventional competitive pressure has mostly been removed.
That is a very specific kind of freedom, if you know how to use it.

It is a settled relationship with circumstances that cannot be destabilized by those circumstances turning unfavorable. The secret is not suppressing the desire to win. It is competing with the full investment of a person whose identity is not riding on the result.
The team with nothing to lose can play a specific way that the team with everything to lose cannot. The protection of the expected outcome creates a kind of tightness in competition that constrains the full expression of what a team can do. The team that has already accepted the underdog position — or the team whose season has already ended in the standings and is playing out the schedule — has that tightness removed.
The history of sports is full of games won by teams that had no business winning them, precisely because the freedom of not being expected to win produced a quality of performance that the expected-to-win team could not match. The underdog plays loose. The favorite plays tight. Loose usually beats tight.
