The Yips

Timing 15–20 min
Setting Individual or team gathering when a player is experiencing the yips or severe performance anxiety on a specific shot
Audience Golfers and coaches
Tone Honest and pastoral. Names the yips as a real condition deserving real acknowledgment.

You have made ten thousand putts from this distance. You know mechanically what to do. The stroke is trained. And standing over the ball, something happens that has nothing to do with your mechanics and everything to do with your mind.

The yips are the golf world’s name for the mental interference that invades a mastered physical skill and makes it unreliable. And they are one of the most honest and humbling experiences available in sport.

Read this passage slowly.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Not a spirit of timidity, but of power and self-discipline. The yips produce a specific form of timidity — the sudden intrusion of self-consciousness into a physical action that was unconscious until it became conscious. The three-foot putt that a player has made automatically for years becomes difficult precisely because attention has been directed at the mechanics rather than the target. The conscious mind has interfered with what the unconscious mind had been handling efficiently.

The research on the yips is clear about their origin: they are a form of performance anxiety that redirects cognitive attention from the external target to the internal mechanics, producing a movement quality that is worse than the unconscious execution the anxiety interrupted. The cure is not technique. It is the restoration of the trust in the physical system that anxiety disrupted.

This is genuinely hard. The anxiety that produced the yips is not accessible to reason in the moment of the putt. The player who tries to think their way out of the yips is using the very faculty that is causing the problem. What helps is the redirection of attention — to the target, to a pre-shot routine that bypasses the interference, to the breath, to something external — that allows the trained movement to execute without the conscious mind auditing it in real time.

The yips are not a technique problem. They are trust interrupted by anxiety. The restoration of trust in the physical system — not more conscious control — is what resolves them.

One Question

What are the specific conditions in which the yips are most present for you? What is the anxiety actually about in those moments — what is at stake that produces the interference?

The named condition and the named stake is the psychological target. Consider recommending a sports psychologist for golfers with severe yip patterns — this is a well-studied phenomenon with specific interventions.

Carry This Out

Not a spirit of timidity. Redirect to the target. Trust the stroke. Let it go.

For the Person Delivering This
Sensitive Context

The yips are a source of genuine distress and sometimes shame for the golfers experiencing them. Handle with pastoral care.

Professional Support

Severe yip patterns often benefit from working with a sports psychologist. This devotional creates the conversation; professional support provides the specific intervention.
