The Season Arc

First Steps

Timing 15–20 min
Setting Opening week team meeting
Audience Athletes
Tone Deliberate. Sets the cultural tone for the season.

Ask anyone who has coached for more than a few seasons and they’ll tell you: you can usually see the whole season in the first week.

Not the record. Not the wins and losses. But the team. How they respond to the first hard practice. How they treat each other when things get uncomfortable. How they carry themselves when no one is testing them yet.

First steps reveal character. And they also form it. What you do first sets the pattern everything else follows.

Read this passage slowly.

The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.

Proverbs 4:7 — ESV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Proverbs says the beginning of wisdom is getting wisdom. That sounds circular until you understand what wisdom is in the Hebrew tradition — it’s not intelligence. It’s skill applied to real life. It’s knowing what to do and actually doing it in the moment.

The verse is saying: the first move matters. What you prioritize at the start shapes everything that comes after. This is true in life and it’s true on a team.

The team that decides in week one what kind of team they’re going to be — not in a speech, but in their actual behavior — is the team that gets to build on that foundation. The team that defers that decision, assuming they’ll figure it out as the season goes, usually doesn’t like what they’ve built by December.

So here’s the first-week question: what kind of team are you going to be before the pressure shows up? Because pressure doesn’t build character. It reveals it. And what it reveals is whatever you built before it arrived.

This week, you get to decide. How you treat your teammates when you’re not being watched. How you respond to the first correction. How you carry the standard when it would be easier to let it slide. These are the first steps. They matter more than you think.

Pressure doesn’t build character. It reveals whatever you built before it arrived.

One Question

What’s one specific behavior or standard you want to be known for establishing in the first week of this season? Not the team — you personally.

Individual answers here are better than group statements. The question is personal and specific. Hold the room to that.

Carry This Out

The first week is a foundation. Build the one you want to stand on in February.
