Life Beyond the Sport
The team has been your community.
Not just your athletic community. For many of you, the people in this room are the people you do life with — who you eat with, who you process hard things with, who share your schedule, your values, and your proximity. And when the team ends, that community does not transfer automatically anywhere. You have to rebuild it, and most former athletes never fully do.
Read this passage slowly.
And let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:25 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
Do not give up meeting together. The instruction assumes that gathering is an active choice that requires effort — not the default it becomes when the schedule forces it. The athlete whose faith community was built into the team structure has never had to choose it. After the team ends, choosing it becomes the entire work.
The practical challenge is specific: finding a faith community that provides what the team provided without the team’s structural advantages. The team community was built on proximity, shared purpose, shared schedule, and the sustained relationship of a season. A church, a small group, a community of any kind built after the team ends requires intentional investment over a long enough period to build the same depth that the team built, and most former athletes are not patient enough with that process.
The advice is practical: start before the team ends. The athlete who connects with a church or a faith community while still on the team is not starting from scratch when the team ends. Find the community. Commit to it for long enough to actually be part of it rather than a visitor. The depth of connection in that community is directly proportional to the time and investment put in, the same way the depth of the team chemistry was.
Find the community before the team ends. Start before you need it. The depth of any community is proportional to the time and investment put in, the same as the team chemistry was.
Do you have a faith community outside this team right now? If not, what is one specific step you could take in the next month toward finding one?
Specific and actionable. The one step is more useful than the general aspiration.
Don’t wait until the team ends to find the community. Find it now and let it build.
Most directly applicable to athletes in their final season. Earlier athletes benefit from the awareness but the urgency is lower.
