Being the Youngest Person in the Room

You are the youngest person in this room.

You have less experience at this level than everyone else in the building. The playbook that took veterans years to absorb is new to you. The organizational culture, the unwritten norms of this locker room, the specific way this coaching staff wants things done — all of it is information that everyone else already has and you are still learning.

That position is uncomfortable. It is also one of the most valuable you will ever occupy.

Read this passage slowly.

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Listen to advice and accept discipline. The instruction is for the person who is in the learning position — who has not yet accumulated enough experience to rely primarily on their own judgment and whose development depends on receiving what is available from the people who have been where they are going.

The rookie who resists the learning role — who is so committed to the identity of being among the best that being a beginner at this level feels like a threat — is the rookie who learns slowly and often expensively. The adjustment to the elite level requires the temporary suspension of the ego that got you here so that the learning available at this level can actually happen.

Being the youngest person in the room is a specific gift: you have permission to not know things, to ask questions that the veteran cannot ask without looking uninformed, to absorb information from every direction without the pressure to already have the answers. That permission expires. The veteran cannot ask the questions you can ask right now. Use the window.

The named question is the humility in practice. Create safety to name it.
