Elite Series
The deal came faster than you expected.
Maybe you are a freshman or sophomore and the market responded to your potential before your development has caught up with it. Maybe the deal is larger than anything you have navigated financially. Maybe the obligations of the deal — the content requirements, the appearances, the social media commitment — are more demanding than you understood when you signed.
The NIL deal that arrives before the maturity to handle it is one of the specific formation challenges the NIL era has produced.
Read this passage slowly.
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
Pride goes before destruction. The proverb is describing what happens when a person’s self-assessment is elevated beyond what the actual development warrants — when the external recognition outruns the internal formation and the person begins to operate from a position of assumed competence they haven’t yet earned.
The NIL deal that arrives too fast creates exactly this risk. The external recognition — the market’s assessment of the athlete’s commercial value — is a financial evaluation, not a formation one. The brand that wants to attach to the athlete’s name is assessing the current market value of that name, not the readiness of the person behind it to handle what the deal requires.
The athlete who receives a significant NIL deal before they are developmentally ready for it needs specific support that the deal itself does not provide: the trusted advisor who has no financial interest in the deal, the mentor who can speak honestly about what the obligations actually require, the formation context that keeps the deal in its right place relative to the athletic development and the character growth that are still happening simultaneously.
The deal is a gift. Receive it with the humility to acknowledge that the formation required to handle it well may still be in process.
The market assesses the commercial value of the name, not the readiness of the person behind it. The deal can arrive before the formation to handle it. Receive it with that awareness.
Is there anyone in your life right now who is helping you navigate the NIL obligations with no financial interest in the deal itself? If not, who should that person be?
The named trusted person is the action item.
The deal is a gift. Receive it with humility. The formation to handle it well may still be in process.
Most relevant for freshman and sophomore athletes whose NIL activity has arrived early in their development.
