The Door That Opens Because Another Closed

You’re in a different place than you expected to be.

The original path didn’t work out. The door you wanted stayed closed. And somehow — through a series of events that you could not have planned and would not have chosen — you ended up here. In this program. With these people. On this path.

And some part of you is beginning to think: this might be where I was supposed to be.

Read this passage slowly.

Let that sit for a second before you move.

An open door that no one can shut. The image is of an opportunity that is genuinely available — not contingent on whether other doors opened or closed, not dependent on the path you had originally mapped. It’s here. It’s open. It’s yours.

The athlete who is able to look back at a closed door from the vantage point of what came after it almost always says the same thing: I wouldn’t have found this if that had worked out. The path I’m on now was inaccessible from the path I was trying to get to. The rejection redirected me to something I didn’t know I was looking for.

That perspective is not available in the moment of the rejection. It requires time and distance and the accumulation of enough experience in the new direction to see what it is. You can’t manufacture it. You can’t rush to it. It arrives when it arrives.

But when it arrives — when you begin to see the shape of the path that the closed door made possible — it’s worth naming. Not to retroactively celebrate the pain of the rejection. But to acknowledge the gift that was in it. The door that opened because another one didn’t is often the best door you ever walked through.
