Belief Came Before the Win

Timing 15–20 min
Setting Day after an upset win
Audience Athletes
Tone Reflective. Examines what made the upset possible.

Yesterday happened. And now comes the interesting question: what actually made it possible?

Not the tactical stuff — the film session will handle that. The deeper question. Why did this team believe it could win when most of the evidence suggested otherwise?

And whatever the answer is — how do you keep that?

Read this passage slowly.

“If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

Mark 9:23 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

A man comes to Jesus with a son who is suffering. And before asking for help, he says: if you can do anything. Jesus responds to the “if” directly. That’s where the limitation lives — not in the power available, but in the belief that it’s accessible.

Belief is not wishful thinking. It’s not convincing yourself something is true when it isn’t. It’s the choice to operate as if the outcome is open — because it is. The upset was possible because your team competed as if it was possible. That’s not magic. That’s the function of genuine belief in competition.

The team that takes the floor already believing they’ve lost plays differently than the team that takes the floor believing the game is open. You can see it in the body language, the decision-making, the willingness to take risks in the right moments.

What you demonstrated yesterday is that you have the capacity to believe fully even when external evidence says otherwise. That’s rare. And it’s transferable.

The question for this week is: what do you do to protect that? Because belief is fragile. It can erode. The way you practice this week, the way you talk to each other, the way you approach the next opponent — all of it either feeds the belief or drains it.

Feed it.

The upset was possible because your team competed as if it was possible. That’s the function of genuine belief.

One Question

What’s the one thing you personally did or felt before or during that game that let you compete without the weight of the expectation? How do you get back to that?

Individual reflection on the internal experience. Let people be specific. The answers build a shared vocabulary for what belief actually feels like for this team.

Carry This Out

You believed when you didn’t have to. Keep feeding it.
