What the Process Is Actually Building

Tone Revealing. Names what is being built in the process that the results don’t show.

You know what the process is supposed to produce: better performance. A higher level of play. The result you’re working toward.

That’s true. And it’s incomplete. Because the process is building something in you that goes beyond the performance, and most athletes never stop to notice it.

Read this passage slowly.

Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:3–4 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Mature and complete, not lacking anything. That’s a description of a person, not a performance. James is pointing to what the process of testing produces in the person who goes through it: not just skill, not just results, but a wholeness. A completeness. The development of something that makes the person more than they were before the process.

What is the daily process of athletic preparation actually building?

It’s building the discipline of doing the required thing when you don’t feel like doing it. That discipline is a transferable skill that works everywhere, not just in sport.

It’s building the capacity to be coached — to receive correction and apply it, to be honest about your weaknesses, to remain open to instruction. That capacity makes you better at every skill you ever try to develop.

It’s building the experience of persevering through difficulty. Every time you complete a hard practice, every time you show up when you didn’t want to, every time you stay with the process when the results aren’t there yet — you are building evidence that you can do hard things. That evidence is the foundation of resilience.

And it’s building the character that forms only in sustained effort toward something that matters. You can’t shortcut your way to that character. The process is the mechanism. Do it fully and it builds more than the performance.

The daily process is building discipline, coachability, resilience, and character — things that transfer everywhere and outlast sport by decades.

One Question

What is one non-athletic thing the process of preparing for this sport has built in you? Something that has shown up in how you handle things outside the game?

Connecting athletic development to broader personal formation. The cross-domain examples are often the most powerful.

Carry This Out

The process is building more than performance. Notice it. Let it matter.

Works well in a demanding stretch when athletes need to see the value in what the preparation is producing beyond the immediate performance outcomes.
