The Athlete's Inner Game

The Pressure Is Real. You Are More Real.

Timing 10–15 min
Setting Day of a high-stakes competition
Audience Athletes
Tone Grounding. Sends them into competition from a settled place.

Today is here.

The pressure you’ve been carrying all week is real. The stakes are real. The crowd will be real. The opponent is real.

And you are more real than any of it.

Read this passage slowly.

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

If God is for us. That’s the foundation. Not if the situation is favorable. Not if the odds are in our favor. Not if we’re healthy and rested and sharp. If God is for us — and he is — then who can be against us in any way that ultimately matters?

The opponent can be against you. The circumstances can be against you. Your own nerves can feel like they’re against you. But none of those things get the final word on who you are or what you’re capable of.

Here’s what I want you to carry into today: the pressure is a feature of the moment. It will be there. You will feel it. That’s fine. You are not the pressure. You are not the stakes. You are not the crowd’s expectations or the other team’s reputation or the outcome of last week’s game.

You are a competitor who has been prepared for this moment. Who has done the work. Who is held by something the scoreboard can’t measure. The pressure is in the room with you today. So is the one who is for you.

Go. Be present. Compete from who you actually are, not from the weight of what today could mean. The moment is big. You are bigger.

The pressure is a feature of the moment. You are not the pressure.

One Question

One word. What do you want to be in competition today — one word that describes how you want to show up?

Quick round. One word each. Grounds the room in intention before they go compete.

Carry This Out

The pressure is real. You are more real. Go.
