The Season Arc

It’s Over, and That’s Okay

Timing 15–20 min
Setting After the final game of the season — win or loss
Audience Athletes and coaches
Tone Gentle. Honest. Doesn’t rush to positivity.

It’s over.

However it ended — with a win, with a loss, with a run in the postseason or an early exit — this season is done. This version of this team will never play another game together.

That’s a real thing. And it deserves a real response, not a rushed one.

Read this passage slowly.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

The Teacher in Ecclesiastes is one of the most honest voices in Scripture. He doesn’t pretend endings aren’t hard. He doesn’t tell you to look on the bright side. He says: there is a time for everything. Including this. Including endings.

Seasons end. That’s not a failure. That’s just true. Every team that has ever played eventually played their last game. The question isn’t how to avoid that — it’s how to receive it well.

If you won your last game: the ending was sweet, but it’s still an ending. Something you loved is over. Let yourself feel that alongside the celebration.

If you lost your last game: the ending hurts. That’s real. The hurt means it mattered. Don’t rush past the hurt. You don’t have to have it together right now.

Either way: this season happened. What you built together happened. The relationships, the growth, the moments that shaped this team — those don’t disappear because the season ended. They go with you.

It’s okay that it’s over. It was a season. It was real. And it’s okay to let it end.

The hurt means it mattered. You don’t have to have it together right now.

One Question

What’s the one thing from this season you want to carry with you? Not the results. One thing about who you became or what you experienced.

Deliver this question gently and give real space for silence. The room may be emotional. That’s appropriate. Don’t rush the answers.

Carry This Out

It mattered. It’s okay that it’s over. Carry it well.

Tone After a Loss

If the team just lost their final game, this devotional lands softly. Don’t try to spin the loss positively too fast. The verse gives you permission to simply be in the ending.

Tone After a Win

If the season ended with a championship or a good win, the devotional still works — acknowledge the win, then bring them to the reality that the season is still over and deserves to be marked.

Give It Space

This is not a quick devotional. The room needs more time than usual. Don’t rush it.
