Tone Honest about the grind. Refuses to sugarcoat it.

Nobody makes a movie about the middle of the season.

The beginning has energy — fresh start, new year, possibility. The end has stakes — playoffs, championships, the last game. But the middle? The middle is just work. It’s the stretch where the novelty is completely gone, the injuries start accumulating, the schedule looks long, and nothing about what you’re doing feels particularly dramatic.

This is where most seasons are actually decided. Not at the end. Here.

Read this passage slowly.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Paul wrote this to a community that was tired. Not physically tired — spiritually tired. They had been doing the right things for a long time and the results hadn’t arrived yet. The harvest was real. But it wasn’t here yet.

The temptation in that position is to stop doing the right things. To let the standard slip a little. To take a mental break from the level of effort and attention that got you here. Because nothing dramatic is happening either way, so what difference does it make?

Paul’s answer: the harvest comes to those who don’t quit before it arrives.

That’s the whole message of the midseason. You are in the part of the season where quitting looks reasonable. The fire isn’t there every day. The excitement isn’t automatic. The work requires more will than it did six weeks ago because the feeling has leveled out.

This is the test. Not the big game. Not the final week. This stretch, right now, when nothing feels urgent and everything feels like maintenance.

The teams that win in March are the ones who decided to keep going in November. Not dramatically. Not with a speech. Just by showing up and doing the work one more time.

Do it one more time today.

The teams that win in March are the ones who decided to keep going in November.

One Question

Be honest: what’s the thing that’s hardest to maintain at full intensity right now — not physically, but mentally or relationally? What’s starting to slip that you know matters?

This question will surface real things if the room trusts each other. Don’t rush past it. What comes up here is often exactly what the team needs to address.

Carry This Out

Do it one more time. That’s what the middle requires.

When to Use This

Weeks 4–7 of a typical season — after the opener excitement fades but before the playoff stretch creates urgency. The flat middle.

Don’t Motivate, Identify

Resist the urge to turn this into a hype speech. The power is in naming the flatness honestly. Teams respond better to being seen than being pumped up.
