You hear that? That’s an echo. It’s a beautiful sound. It travels, reflects, and multiplies, carrying sound further than the original source could ever reach.
You know, basketball actually began with a simple goal. On a snowy day with a room full of restless boys, James Naismith saw a ball and a basket and thought, “Maybe hoops could shape souls.” Maybe in the chaos of shoe squeaks and elbows, men could actually find a loving God and become a new creation.
Yet we turn on the film today and we hear a different noise. Contracts, championships, wins and losses. But the only change taking place on eternity’s scoreboard are those digits there in the middle. Our hearts crave for greatness — for ourselves and our players. But greatness doesn’t always look like rings on fingers or banners hanging from the ceiling. It’s the reverberation of a sound greater than the one that created it. It’s lives transformed because someone took the time to care.
Billy Graham once said, “A coach will impact more people in one year than the average person will in an entire lifetime.”
So, who’s coaching the coaches?
Across the country, there are around 3,880 collegiate basketball programs with an estimated 23,280 coaches leading over 73,720 student athletes each year. Nations of Coaches seeks to equip coaches to leave a legacy of excellence and develop athletes as a whole person — in mind, body, and soul. We equip coaches in their leadership, programs, and homes, all with the goal to bring basketball back to its original purpose.
Naismith dreamed a gym would lead to the Master. That athletes would meet Jesus on wooden floors.
And yet, that legacy is constantly threatened, clouded by pressure and an ungodly, impossible pace.
But coach, your legacy won’t be measured by rings and banners.
It’ll be measured by them — long after that ball stops bouncing. The echoes of your words, the depth of your faith, the strength of your example — these will remain.
And one day when you watch the film back, will you like what you see?
