Elite Series
The game is paying for it right now.
The income, the platform, the network, the credibility that the career is generating — all of it is available in its current form because you are competing at this level. And all of it will change when you are not.
The question worth asking in the middle of the career, not at the end of it, is: what are you building with what the game is providing?
Read this passage slowly.
By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.
Proverbs 24:3–4 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
By wisdom a house is built. The building happens during the earning — the investments made, the skills developed, the relationships formed, the identity cultivated that will constitute the life when the career’s specific provision is no longer available. The house built during the career is what you live in after it.
The athletes who transition well out of professional sport are almost universally the ones who were building something during the career rather than simply living inside it. The educational credential pursued during the off-season. The business relationship started because the platform made it possible and maintained because it has genuine value. The community investment that produced real relationships independent of the career. The faith formation that deepened during the career and provides the identity anchor when the athletic identity is no longer available.
The career is the most resource-rich period of most athletes’ lives. The income is at its peak. The platform is at its peak. The network is at its peak. The opportunities available because of what you do are at their maximum. The wisdom is in using those resources to build something that does not depend on the career to sustain it.
The athletes who transition well are the ones who were building something during the career, not just living inside it. The career is the most resource-rich period of most athletes’ lives. Build accordingly.
Name one thing you are actively building right now that will still be standing when the career is over. If you can’t name one, that is the most important information from this conversation.
The named thing — or the inability to name one — is the formation diagnostic.
Build the house during the earning. The career is providing the resources. Use them for what comes after.
Most powerful mid-career when there is still time to build and the urgency of the short window is becoming real.
