⭐ Elite Series — Pro & NIL Athletes

The locker room now has a financial hierarchy that the previous era didn’t.

Some of your teammates have significant NIL deals. Some have modest ones. Some have nothing yet. And everyone knows — or thinks they know — roughly where everyone else sits in that hierarchy. That information, in a room that is supposed to operate as a team, creates a specific kind of tension.

Read this passage slowly.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

Philippians 2:3 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

In humility value others above yourselves. The instruction is not about pretending the NIL disparity doesn’t exist or that the feelings it produces are illegitimate. It is about the posture that the person with the larger deal brings to the room and the posture that the person with the smaller deal brings to the same room.

The athlete with the larger NIL deal carries a specific responsibility in the locker room: to not let the external financial recognition translate into a social hierarchy within the team. The endorsement does not make you a better teammate. It does not give you more authority in the huddle. It does not entitle you to more deference in the space that is shared equally by every person who earned a roster spot.

The athlete with the smaller deal or no deal carries a different challenge: the comparison that is now financially concrete in a way that athletic comparison wasn’t. The person whose NIL value is lower has received an external market assessment that is easy to confuse with an assessment of their worth as a player and a person. Those are not the same thing. The NIL market evaluates commercial potential. It knows nothing about your character, your value to the team, your trajectory as an athlete, or who you are.

The NIL market evaluates commercial potential. It knows nothing about your character, your value to this team, your trajectory as an athlete, or who you are.

One Question

Has the NIL situation in this locker room affected how you relate to specific teammates? What would it look like to relate to them the same way you did before you knew what their deal was?

The specific named teammate is the honest answer. The practical behavior change is the action item.

Carry This Out

The endorsement does not make you a better teammate. Compete together. The NIL is outside the lines.
