The career is shorter than it looks right now.
From the beginning of a professional career, the timeline appears long. The years stretch ahead. The experience accumulates. The best seasons seem to be in the future. And then, with a speed that almost every athlete describes as surprising, the career is in its final chapter before the beginning feels recent.
The average career at the elite level is measured in single digits. The window is real and it is finite and it is open right now.
Read this passage slowly.
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Teach us to number our days. The prayer is for the wisdom that comes from honest accounting of the time available — not as a morbid preoccupation with limitation, but as the practical foundation for intentional living. The person who has an accurate sense of how much time is available makes different choices than the one who assumes the window is always further out than it currently is.
The elite athlete who numbers the career days — who operates with a realistic sense of the window rather than the assumption that there is always another season — uses the career differently than the one who treats it as indefinite. The financial preparation that happens while the income is available. The development of the identity and the skills and the community that will constitute the life after the career ends. The relationships built during the career that are not contingent on the career continuing.
None of this means playing with the anxiety of the ending. It means playing with the awareness of the gift — that this window, right now, is one that will close, and that the person who uses it fully and prepares well for what follows it is the one who transitions well when the close comes.
The person who operates with a realistic sense of the career window uses it differently than the one who treats it as indefinite. Number your days. Use the window fully.
If the career ended in the next two years — which is statistically possible for most athletes — what would you wish you had done differently with the time and income it provided?
The answer to the hypothetical is the action item for the present. Take it seriously.
