Why You Care So Much

At some point you probably asked yourself: why do I care this much?

The team lost and your evening was ruined. The game ran long and you stayed up past when you should have. You drove four hours to watch something that took two hours and ended badly. You know, on some level, that the outcome has no direct bearing on your life. And yet something in you is deeply, genuinely invested in it.

That investment is worth understanding. Not because it is wrong, but because what it reveals about you is more interesting than the game itself.

Read this passage slowly.

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Jesus is not making a point about sports when he says this — but the principle applies anywhere energy and attention are directed. The things you invest in emotionally, financially, temporally — the things you arrange your schedule around, that affect your mood, that you think about when you don’t have to think about anything — those things are telling you something about where your heart is.

The sports fan’s investment is usually carrying something beyond the game. The team became meaningful during a specific season of life. The sport is connected to a person — a parent who watched with you, a child you watch now, a version of yourself that competed once. The investment in the outcome is often an investment in the relationship or the memory the sport holds.

That is not a problem. It is actually a doorway. The question is not whether you care too much about sports. It is: what is the caring about sports connected to that matters? What is the team holding that you actually treasure? When you understand what the investment is carrying, you understand something true about yourself that the final score never reveals.

Personal reflection question. The honest answer is often more significant than expected.
