Shaving Down

Timing 15–20 min
Setting Team gathering at the start of championship taper week
Audience Swimmers and coaches
Tone Elevating and clarifying. The ritual of shaving down as a picture of intentional preparation and release.

This week, many of you will shave down.

Not because body hair is morally significant. Because in a sport measured in hundredths of a second, the hydrodynamic drag reduction is real and worth the effort. You are removing everything that slows you from the body you will race in. That is a ritual — and like all genuine rituals, it means more than the physical action it involves.

Read this passage slowly.

Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Hebrews 12:1 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Throw off everything that hinders. The writer of Hebrews is describing a spiritual shave-down: the deliberate removal of whatever adds drag to the race marked out for you. The image is of a runner at a track, stripping off the outer garments before competing — releasing the weight that was appropriate for the journey but inappropriate for the race.

The physical shave-down creates a psychological shift that swimmers describe consistently: the sense that something has been removed, that the water feels different, that the body is more ready than it was before the ritual. Part of that is real hydrodynamics. Part of it is the mind’s response to a deliberate act of preparation — the declaration that this week is different, that the body has been prepared specifically for what is coming, that the season of training has led to this and the body is ready for it.

Consider what else needs to be thrown off this week alongside the body hair. The anxiety about the competition that has been accumulating. The comparison to other swimmers in your event. The narrative about what this meet has to produce for the season to have been worth it. Those things add drag in a way that no razor addresses. The mental shave-down is the harder and more important preparation.

The physical shave-down declares the body ready. The mental shave-down releases everything that adds drag the razor can’t touch. Both preparations are required this week.

One Question

What is the mental or emotional weight you are carrying into this championship meet that you need to release before you race? Name it specifically.

The named thing is the mental preparation work. Take it seriously.

Carry This Out

Throw off everything that hinders. Shave down — in every sense. Race clean.
