The Double Header

Timing 10–15 min
Setting Between games of a doubleheader
Audience Softball players and coaches
Tone Activating and brief. Between-game reset for a team already mid-competition.

One game down. One to go.

What happened in the first game — whether it went well or went sideways — is now information. You can’t undo it. What you can do is choose how you enter the next one.

The doubleheader is one of the most demanding days in softball. Twice the physical output, twice the mental investment, half the recovery time. The teams that handle it well don’t do it because they feel better. They do it because they know how to reset.

Read this passage slowly.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Inwardly renewed day by day. Paul is talking about something much larger than a doubleheader, but the principle is exactly right: the outer person gets depleted; the inner one has access to a renewal that doesn’t depend on the physical state. Between games of a doubleheader, the body is tired. The competitive mind and will are not required to be.

Here is what the second game asks that the first one didn’t: the decision to be fully present when the fully present option is harder to access. The adrenaline of game one is spent. The legs have done the work. And now the team has to locate the investment again from somewhere beneath the fatigue.

That somewhere is always character. The team that plays the second game well does so because its competitive commitment is not conditional on how fresh it feels. The standard holds in game two because the standard doesn’t belong to the energy level. It belongs to the culture.

Eat something. Hydrate. Take ten minutes to be quiet if you need it. And then come back ready to compete with the same standard this team plays with when it feels good. Because that standard is who you are, not how your legs feel.

The standard holds in game two because it doesn’t belong to the energy level. It belongs to the culture.

One Question

What is one specific thing you need to do in the next 45 minutes to be ready to compete at full investment in game two?

Specific and practical. This is an activation question, not a reflection question. Keep the gathering brief and send them to the practical tasks.

Carry This Out

Reset. The standard holds. Game two starts fresh.

Between Games

This devotional is for the space between games of a doubleheader. Keep it under 10 minutes. The team has physical needs — food, hydration, rest — that compete with the gathering time. Be brief and send them to those needs quickly.
