⚽ Youth Sports — Ages 12 & Under

Before we talk about anything else this season, I want to ask you one question.

Why do you play?

Not the answer your parents want to hear. The real one. Maybe it’s because you love it. Maybe it’s because your friends do it. Maybe it’s because you’re really good at it. Maybe it’s just fun. All of those are honest answers, and all of them are good.

Read this passage slowly.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.

James 1:17 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Here’s something worth knowing: God made you able to run and jump and throw and kick and compete. That’s not an accident. The ability to play a sport — to use your body and work with other people toward something — is a gift. James says every good gift comes from God. That includes the gift of being able to play.

Not everyone gets to play. Some kids are sick. Some don’t have a team. Some don’t have the equipment or the space. You do. That’s worth being grateful for before the season even starts.

So this season, whenever it gets hard — and it will get hard sometimes — remember that you started this because you wanted to. You’re here because you love it. That’s a good thing to keep close all season long.

The ability to play is a gift. Not everyone gets it. You do.

One Question

What is one thing you love about your sport that has nothing to do with winning?

Let every kid answer if the group is small enough. The answers are usually genuine and set a great tone for the season.

Carry This Out

You get to play. That’s a good thing. Don’t forget it.

Delivery Note

This is the first devotional of the season. Keep it light and conversational. The goal is for kids to feel excited, not lectured. Let the discussion run — it builds team connection from day one.

Age Appropriate

Written for ages 8–12. For younger groups (6–8), simplify the open further and use one concrete example from their specific sport.
