You Are Not What This Program Was

Tone Separating. The present team is not responsible for the past program.

This program has a story that started before you got here.

Losing seasons. Or a scandal. Or the reputation that precedes you when you walk into a gym — the assumption in other people’s eyes about what kind of team this is before the game even starts. You did not create that story. You inherited it. And now you have to decide what to do with it.

Read this passage slowly.

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

Isaiah 43:18–19 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

I am doing a new thing. The invitation from Isaiah is not to pretend the past didn’t happen — the former things were real and they mattered. It is to perceive what is being done now, in the present, which is different from what came before. The new thing requires perception: the willingness to see it rather than remaining defined by the former things.

The program’s history is not your identity. The losing record that preceded you, the culture that was built before you arrived, the reputation that accumulated in other programs’ film libraries — none of that belongs to you in the way that matters most. It is context, not destiny.

What belongs to you is what happens now. The choices this team makes in this season. The culture this group of people builds in this locker room. The way this team competes on nights when the history would predict otherwise. Every time this team performs in a way that contradicts the narrative, the narrative changes. Not immediately. Not because of one game. Through the accumulated weight of a team that consistently refuses to be defined by what it used to be.

The new thing is springing up. Perceive it. Be it.

The program’s history is context, not destiny. Every time this team performs in a way that contradicts the narrative, the narrative changes. Perceive the new thing. Be it.

One Question

What is one specific thing this team can do this season that would be genuinely inconsistent with the program’s past reputation? What would it take to do that thing?

Forward-looking and specific. The named action becomes the first chapter of the new story.

Carry This Out

You are not what this program was. See what is being built now. Be that.

Rebuilding Programs

This devotional is most powerful in programs genuinely working to change a losing or troubled history. Avoid it in programs where the history claim would feel inauthentic.
