When the Season Is on the Line Tonight

This is the game.

Not a game. The game this season has been building toward. Everyone in this room has given something to get here — the early mornings, the film sessions, the hard practices, the conversations nobody outside this room saw. Tonight is where all of that either gets to mean something or gets deferred to next season.

I want to say two things briefly and then let you compete.

Read this passage slowly.

Let that sit for a second before you move.

Be strong and courageous. The command is to Joshua on the eve of the Jordan crossing — the moment when everything that had been promised was about to be tested by the actual doing of it. The promise had been made. The preparation had been done. The crossing was tonight. And the instruction was not a strategy or a scouting report. It was: be strong, be courageous, do not be afraid, I am with you.

Two things. First: you have been prepared for this. The work was done. The foundation was built. Tonight is not the moment to wish you had prepared differently. It is the moment to trust what you actually built and compete from it with full confidence.

Second: the outcome of this game does not define the value of this season. The season will have meant something regardless of what the next two hours produce. The people in this room, the things you built together, the person each of you became in it — those are real and they remain real whatever the scoreboard says at the end.

Now go compete. With everything you have.
