The Season Arc

Camp Is Where Culture Gets Made

Timing 15–20 min
Setting Mid-to-late preseason camp, after initial practices have established patterns
Audience Athletes and coaches
Tone Constructive and urgent. What is being built right now will be hard to change later.

Pay attention to what is forming in this room right now.

Not the scheme. Not the conditioning numbers. The culture. The patterns that are developing in how this team handles difficulty, how it treats its least prominent members, how it responds to coaching, how it competes on the days when nobody feels like competing. Those patterns are forming right now, in camp, and they are much harder to change once the regular season starts.

Read this passage slowly.

He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

Luke 6:48 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

He dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. The depth of the foundation determines the stability of everything built on it. The builder who goes shallow saves time at the beginning and pays for it when the flood comes. The builder who digs deep invests time and effort that is invisible in the finished structure but determines whether the structure survives.

Camp is foundation work. The visible product of camp — the conditioning, the scheme installation, the roster decisions — is not the most important thing happening here. The most important thing is the culture being laid in the foundation. How the team handles the 5 AM session. What happens when a player cuts a corner and nobody official sees it. Whether the veterans make the freshmen feel welcomed or hazed. Whether accountability exists between teammates or only between coaches and players.

The team that builds the right culture in camp has a foundation that holds when the season gets hard. And every season gets hard. The losses come. The injuries happen. The adversity arrives without a schedule. When it does, the team falls back on what was built in the foundation — on the culture that formed before any of that happened.

You are building the foundation right now. Build it deep. Build it on rock. The flood is coming eventually.

The culture forming in camp right now is the foundation everything else will rest on. The flood is coming eventually. Build the foundation deep enough to hold when it arrives.

One Question

What pattern is forming in this team right now — in camp, in practice, in the room — that you are proud of? What pattern is forming that concerns you?

Two-part question. The second part is the more important one. The honest answer produces the specific culture work the team still needs to do.

Carry This Out

Build the foundation deep. What gets set in camp is what the season stands on.
