Who We Are — Session 3: Living from the Foundation

Timing 20–25 min
Setting Week 3 of a three-week devotional series
Audience Athletes
Tone Integrating. Connects the identity foundation to daily competitive life.

Three weeks ago, we asked who you are apart from the sport.

Last week, we looked at the story you’re telling yourself.

Today is the practical question: what does it look like to actually live from the foundation we identified? Not just know it — compete from it, daily.

Read this passage slowly.

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

The life I now live. Paul is describing his daily life — what it looks like to actually be in the world with the identity he has located. Not the theology of it. The daily reality. The life I now live, I live by faith. That’s the practical application: a life lived from a foundation that is more permanent than the circumstances.

For the athlete, living from the foundation looks like specific daily habits of mind. Before competition: naming the foundation rather than the pressure. After a bad performance: returning to the true story rather than the limiting one. In the comparison loop: returning to the lane that is yours rather than monitoring someone else’s. Under coaching: receiving correction from a place of security rather than defensiveness.

None of those shifts are automatic. They are practiced. The athlete who wants to compete from a settled identity has to actively locate that identity before the situation requires it — because in the heat of competition, you respond from what you’ve built in the quiet.

You’ve spent three weeks on the foundation. Now build on it. Daily. In the small moments that form the person who shows up in the significant ones.

You respond from what you’ve built in the quiet. The daily return to the foundation is how it becomes the thing you compete from.

One Question

What is one daily habit or practice you can begin this week that keeps you connected to the foundation we’ve been building over these three sessions?

Practical commitment. The daily habit is the application of the series.

Carry This Out

Live from the foundation. Daily. That’s how it becomes real.

Series Conclusion

This is the final session of the three-week series. It should summarize what was built in all three sessions and land a clear daily application.
