Life Beyond the Sport
Something is beginning to take shape.
The transition is not complete — maybe it never fully is. But the next chapter is becoming more visible. The purpose is starting to clarify. The new community is forming. The work that will follow the athletic work is beginning to make itself known.
I want to name that. And to put it in the larger frame of the story you’re in.
Read this passage slowly.
Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 1:6 — NIVLet that sit for a second before you move.
He who began a good work will carry it to completion. The work that was started in you — through the years of athletic development, through the discipline and the resilience and the character formation that the sport produced — was not completed by the sport. It was started there. And the completion is ongoing.
The post-sport chapter is not a lesser version of the athletic chapter. It’s the continuation of the same story. The same person, with everything the sport built in them, in a new context, with new opportunities, toward the completion of a work that is larger than any single chapter.
The athletic chapter was significant. It shaped you in ways that matter. It was not, however, the whole story. You are not a former athlete trying to figure out what comes next. You are a person who was formed in part by serious athletic competition and who is now bringing that formation into the chapters that follow.
The rest of the story is worth being in. Fully, presently, with the same investment you brought to the sport. Because the work that was begun in you is still being carried to completion. It didn’t stop when the eligibility ended.
You are not a former athlete figuring out what comes next. You are a person formed by sport who is bringing that formation into every chapter that follows.
What is the next chapter beginning to look like? What is the good work that is continuing in you, and what form is it taking in this new context?
Forward-looking and affirming. The question is about the emerging chapter, not the closed one.
The work begun in you is still being carried to completion. Be in the rest of the story fully.
This devotional is for athletes who are further into the post-sport transition — when the next chapter is becoming visible. Not for the acute transition phase.
