The Season Arc
Somebody in this room is carrying last season.
Maybe it was a great season and you’re trying to protect it. Maybe it was a hard season and you’re still dragging it around. Maybe it was somewhere in between and you’re not sure what to do with it.
Either way — today is a starting line. And starting lines are interesting because they ask something of you that finish lines don’t.
A finish line lets you arrive. A starting line asks you to decide.
Read this passage slowly.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”

The verse doesn’t say the former things were bad. It doesn’t say last season was a failure or that what happened before didn’t matter. It says forget them. And that’s actually harder when things were good.
If last season was difficult, forgetting it feels like relief. If last season was great, forgetting it feels like loss. But the verse doesn’t grade last season. It just says there’s something new happening now, and the question is whether you’ll be present enough to see it.
That’s what a starting line requires. Presence. You can’t run a race looking sideways at what you did the last time you stood here.
The hardest thing about a new season isn’t the workload. It isn’t the competition. It’s the decision to actually start fresh when part of you wants to stay where you were — whether that’s protecting a past win or staying wounded from a past loss.
The people who thrive in new seasons are the ones who make a specific decision on the first day. Not a vague intention to do better. Not a hope that things will be different. A decision. Today I am going to be a different version of this team than we were before.
That decision doesn’t erase the past. It doesn’t mean you didn’t earn what you did or suffer what you suffered. It just means you’re not going to let either one of those things set the ceiling for this season.
The new thing God is doing always starts before you can fully see it. The question is whether you’re moving toward it or standing still waiting for proof.

What’s one thing from last season — a habit, a mindset, a dynamic — that you’re choosing to leave at this starting line and not carry into this one?
This question can go deep fast. Don’t force it. If people give surface answers, that’s fine. The question does its work even when the answers are quiet.
