What You’re Walking Away From

Timing 15–20 min
Setting Senior gathering, separate from the team
Audience Seniors
Tone Tender. Sits with the complexity of finishing something significant.

I want to talk to you without the ceremony for a minute.

What you’re walking away from is real. The daily structure, the teammates, the identity of being an athlete in this program, the rhythms of practice and game day that have organized your life for years — you’re walking away from all of it. And that’s a loss worth acknowledging before you celebrate what it was.

Read this passage slowly.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.

Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 — NIV

Let that sit for a second before you move.

A time to uproot. The Preacher is not saying uprooting is bad. He’s saying it’s real, it has its own season, and that season has arrived for you. The uprooting of something that has grown deeply is not a smooth process. It leaves a mark. And the mark is appropriate to the depth of what was growing.

The seniors who handle this transition best are almost always the ones who let themselves feel the full complexity of it. The grief of what is ending alongside the gratitude for what it was. The anxiety about what comes next alongside the confidence built from what was accomplished here. Both things, simultaneously, without resolving the tension too quickly.

You don’t have to be past this yet. The season isn’t fully over. What you’re walking away from is still right in front of you. Let yourself be in it — fully, presently, without rushing to the next thing. The next chapter will announce itself soon enough. Right now, you’re still in this one.

What you built here matters. What you’re losing is real. Both things are true. Let them both be true tonight.

The seniors who handle this transition best let themselves feel the full complexity of it — grief and gratitude simultaneously, without resolving the tension too quickly.

One Question

What are you most going to miss about this? Not the obvious answer — the thing you’re surprised to find yourself grieving.

Create genuine privacy for this conversation if possible. The honest answer is often unexpected and significant.

Carry This Out

Let both things be true. The grief and the gratitude. You’re still in this chapter. Be here.

This devotional is specifically for the seniors, ideally in a separate gathering from the full team. The vulnerability required is harder in a large group.
